DeMarco (Tony) is born in the North End.

January 14, 1932

The son of Italian immigrants Vincenzo and Giacomina DeMarco Liotta, Tony DeMarco grows up at 13 Fleet Street, begins boxing through the Burroughs Newsboys Foundation. He wins the U.S. welterweight boxing title in 1955,* and compiles a 58-12-1 record before retiring in 1962. DeMarco marries JoAnn Costina, moves to Arizona, subsequently returns to Boston, where he works as a court officer at the Massachusetts State House, and dies on Columbus Day, October 11, 2021. According to promoter Al Valenti, “Tony DeMarco is the greatest undisputed champion in the history of Boston . . . [all the other local sports heroes] they’re not Bostonians. Tony was pure Boston.” A statue of DeMarco is dedicated in the North End in 2012.*
